When Communication Breaks Down: The Role of Listening in Mediation

Communication in mediation – creating a space where people feel heard and move towards resolution

When communication breaks down, mediation creates a structured space for listening, movement, and resolution.

A well-known Simon Sinek quote reminds us that “Listening is more than the act of hearing, it is creating an environment in which the other person feels heard”. Communication in mediation is often less about what is said, and more about what is heard.

In mediation, that environment is definitely not incidental, but deliberately created.

When it is done well, it allows for more than just the feeling of being heard. It creates the conditions necessary for real communication and real movement and changes how a person listens, speaks and responds.

At its core, true listening is transformational in nature – it is the starting point for making resolution possible.
